Rashômon (羅生門)

Kurosawa Akira’s famous film from 1950 is loosely based on a short story by Akutagawa Ryûnosuke and features a mesmerizing Mifune as its villain. And now, it has apparently entered the public domain. Meaning it can be downloaded for free, here.

Yûkoku (憂國)

Yûkoku (憂國) still
Mishima Yukio’s 1966 silent movie (starring himself) clocks in at just under 30 minutes, but it has all the gore and creepiness and cold, borderline-kitsch aesthetic that you’d expect from this author. Ever since I read John Nathan’s quite brilliant biography of Mishima, I’ve wanted to see this film. Now you can, too. Greylodge has “Yûkoku – Rite of Love & Death” for download.
